Dave Chappelle Celebrated His Documentary’s Premiere with a Surprise All-Star Concert at Radio City Music Hall

Dave Chappelle capped the premiere of his new documentary at Radio City Music Hall with a righteous line-up of hip-hop heavyweights, featuring appearances from Q-Tip, De La Soul, Ghostface Killah, Redman, and more.

Last night, Dave Chappelle rallied his rap buddies to help him toast the premiere of his new documentary at the Tribeca Festival.

According to a report from Variety, Chappelle threw one of his signature surprise concerts for a packed house at Radio City Music Hall. Though it was only 30-minutes long, the set included appearances from Q-Tip, De La Soul, Redman, Ghostface Killah, Talib Kweli, DJ Clark Kent, A$AP Ferg, and Fat Joe. Being a Chappelle event, no cameras were allowed into the concert hall. However, Radio City shared a few snaps from the show (see them below.)

Capping the two-week-long festival, the documentary (which now goes by the name, This Time This Place,) debuted to a full capacity crowd at Radio City. And according to a report from Variety, the premiere was met with plenty of laughs, claps, and reflection from attendees. The film’s directors (who happen to be Chappelle’s neighbors in Ohio,) were also in attendance. “Documentary film and comedy, you may think are different. It’s all about storytelling and trying to find the truth,” said co-director Julia Reichert.

This Time This Place centers on the comedian’s (very successful) attempt at jumpstarting a small Ohio town’s economy and morale by hosting a series of socially distanced stand-up shows. What was intended to be a week-long event bloomed into a weekly outpost for both Yellow Springs, OH natives and the comedians who joined Chappelle in his neighbor’s 5-acre cornfield (which was nothing short of prestige with names like Chris Rock, Kevin Hart, Michelle Wolf, Tiffany Haddish, Michael Che, Jon Stewart, and literally dozens of other comedy legends taking the stage.)

Catch a glimpse of last night’s festivities below. Hold tight for updates on a proper release of the documentary in the weeks ahead.
