Watch The Official Trailer for Beyoncé’s Upcoming Album ‘Black is King’

Black is King arrives on July 31st via Disney+.

Beyoncé is offering another glimpse at her upcoming visual album, Black is King.

After teasing the project in a clip last month, the official trailer for the album arrived this morning, expanding the scope and scale of its production.

The minute-and-a-half-long clip opens with a boy’s body drifting through the cosmos and the singer’s warm, even-toned narration introducing the Lion King-inspired story. There are shots from the desert, delipidated cities, posh mansions, and sprawling beachside scapes reminiscent of sci-fi portrayals of an astral realm. Throughout the trailer, familiar lines from the beloved animated film and its live-action recalibration bounce between neon-lit frames. There are also appearances from JAY-Z, Lupita Nyong’o, and Naomi Campbell, scattered throughout the visually intensive trailer.

And while it’s still unclear what the film is about or how a new body of music will tie in (presumably including her new single, “BLACK PARADE”,) we do have a delivery date. Black is King is slated to arrive on July 31st via Disney+, who has reportedly inked a distribution deal that will make the film available in a dozen or so African countries where the streaming service is inaccessible.

Black is King, of course, is not the singer’s first run at an audiovisual project. In 2016, Beyoncé surprise-released the hit album, Lemonade, anchored by a film of shorts cut to each song. It premiered on HBO and featured cameos from Chloe x Halle, Zendaya, Serena Williams, and more.
